We researched and tested products from numerous online mattress companies to find the best ones for a wide range of needs. Additionally, we used the insight of Breus to supplement our decisions in finding the most reputable brands. We recommend the Avocado Green Mattress, Saatva, and My Green Mattress to name a few, for details like the quality of materials, customer service, and lengthy warranties. Check out our picks for the best online mattress companies. The Hoboken, New Jersey-based brand currently has 14 retail locations, with more on the horizon. Of course, you can also purchase one of its mattresses on the company’s website. The brand has five mattresses built for adults as well as three crib options and one kid-sized mattress. As far as the adult mattresses go, they’re all available in sizes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king (with two of the options available in the split California king size), and they’re built with green standards in mind. Avocado’s best seller is the Luxury Organic Mattress, a softer option that includes 17 layers of latex, alpaca, wool, silk, and hemp. The mattress offers a choice between the standard option, which ranks a 5/10 on the firmness scale, and the much plusher option, which sits at a 3/10 on the firmness scale. While the price point is higher than many others on the list, you are getting a lot of mattress and a lot of detailing; each mattress is needle tufted by hand. One drawback, however, is that some customers found it to be slightly more firm than expected. Layla offers both a memory foam mattress as well as a more expensive hybrid option. Products are available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. The memory foam mattress uses copper gel, which is able to adjust to your shifting weight with increased firmness, ensuring support all night long. Additionally, copper is conductive, which allows it to draw away heat from your body, ensuring a cooler night of sleep.  However, some customers found this particular Layla mattress to be slightly too firm for their needs. With just two mattresses to choose from, the hybrid alternative may not be any less firm for those in need of extra softness. If you’re a hot sleeper, the Bear Elite Hybrid is a great pick. It includes copper-infused memory foam to ensure a cool night of sleep, and, edge-to-edge individually encased coils increase the durability of this mattress. It’s also UL Greenguard Gold Certified, meaning you can rest easy knowing you’re not breathing in harmful chemicals. Plus, it comes in a box!  One drawback with Bear mattresses, though, is that some customers have complained the product can soften over time, losing the support present in the beginning. The brand has showrooms in California, Washington, Texas, Illinois, and Minnesota, but you can easily purchase through the company’s website as well. With options ranging from hybrid to latex, Nest has nine different mattresses, so there’s something available for every kind of sleeper. There’s also a handy quiz to help you find out which one is best for you. The Robin, a flippable memory foam hybrid, is an option for all kinds of sleepers—stomach, back, and side alike—because of its dual firmness options (medium feel on the top and a firm feel on the bottom). Plus, you get the best of both worlds with CertiPUR-US certified foams offering cushiony support and coils that offer airflow and edge support. Not firm enough? Flip it to the other side! One drawback: Customers have complained that the sides aren’t labeled, meaning they aren’t sure which firmness they’re getting. With its Essential Collection, Purple offers three mattresses at lower prices, all using the company’s GelFlex Grid. The Premium Collection also includes three mattresses, all more expensive and luxury-like in design and materials, with these products featuring an innovative GelFlex Grid as well as a Responsive Coil Core.  In particular, The Purple Mattress has over 1,400 air channels built in, so you know it’ll breathe easy all night long. Plus, the GelFlex grid that Purple is known for supports you while keeping pressure points cradled and comfortable. It’s also a hypoallergenic option, which we think is great! One drawback, however, is it’s hard to move, as there are no handles for transport, as noted by our reviewer. Parachute sells an array of products, including bedding, furniture, shower curtains, and many other items. Only one mattress is offered, but it’s highly regarded—and it can only be purchased online through the company’s website.  This mattress, the Eco Comfort, is built with layers of New Zealand wool, organic cotton, and pocketed steel coils to bring you an eco-friendly night of sleep. It features two comfort zones at the top and bottom to ensure pressure point relief at the shoulders and alignment in the legs, while a support zone in the middle provides stability and enforcement for the hips and back. It’s all about support; however, some customers note that the mattress can lose a bit of support over time. One of the highest-rated picks from My Green Mattress is the Natural Escape. It uses Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified organic latex and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic wool and cotton, which combine to create a natural build with body-conforming comfort. Plus, the company’s attention to detail shines through with the button tufting done by hand across this mattress. One drawback, however, is a slight off-gassing odor that dissipates over time. Also, it can be a bit firm for the first few nights, but it breaks in rather quickly. Saatva offers a slew of luxurious products to meet your needs. From the Solaire, which offers adjustable firmness, to the hypoallergenic-latex-made Zenhaven and five other adult-sized options, the brand really offers something for everyone. If you’re in the market for a Saatva, it does have a handful of viewing rooms, but each mattress is made to order and has to be ordered online. Our favorite is the Saatva Classic Mattress, which received a 4.2 out of 5 stars in testing. It offers a tremendous amount of support and customizability thanks to its three options for firmness: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm. High-density memory foam provides pressure point relief, and our reviewer really liked the edge-to-edge support, saying, “I could roll onto the edge of the bed or sit up with my legs hanging off of it, and the mattress barely gave under my weight and didn’t sag at all.” However, it’s important to note that the coils don’t limit motion transfer, meaning that if your partner moves a lot during the night, you’ll feel it. Brooklyn Bedding offers three different standard mattresses: one with a hotel feel, one cooling, and one hybrid. The brand also offers three different specialty mattresses that are more firm for specific body types and athletes recovering. The brand’s Aurora Luxe Cooling Mattress is for hot sleepers. It uses a GlacioTex Cooling Cover to remove your excess heat, ensuring cool sleep. The cooling technology doesn’t stop there, though. The top comfort layer uses PCM dynamic cooling to absorb heat, while hybrid airflow prevents heat retention. Additionally, it comes in three firmness options, ensuring stomach, side, and back sleepers are all accounted for (and comfortable!). One drawback for some is a soft center that allows for sinking. The brand’s best seller, The WinkBed, has a five-star rating online. It includes a full range of sizes (excluding split California king) and has four firmness options: softer, luxury firm, firmer, and plus (for heavier people). Individually wrapped pocketed coils ensure support along the entire mattress, meaning the edge-of-the-bed sleepers can breathe a sigh of relief. Additionally, the pillow top, with gel-infused foam, provides cushioning where your body needs it most so you can avoid muscle tension. One drawback of this mattress is its weight. Some customers have complained that it’s hard to move, and a lack of handles only compounds the issue. The Tempur-Cloud is a mattress for anybody with back or neck pain, as the Tempur Comfort and Tempur Support layers are designed with responsiveness, conforming, and cushioning to ensure pressure relief all night long. It also offers great motion-transfer reduction to help you and your partner sleep soundly. One drawback is that some find the mattress to be a bit too firm for their needs. Three mattress options are available to accommodate different sleeping styles, needs, and price points. As Breus notes, “Most people do best on a medium firm,” which is why The Mint Mattress from Tuft and Needle is so universally great. Additionally, the T & N adaptive foam offers pressure relief and mitigates hip and shoulder pain. Fortunately, this doesn’t come at the expense of cooling technology. Some users do complain of mild off-gassing when the mattress first arrives, but this dissipates over time. The Casper Original is a classic and for good reason. This mattress offers “cloudlike comfort” according to our reviewer, albeit at a bit of a premium price. The mattress arriving in a box (with a return label included) is incredibly convenient. Casper’s hybrid mattresses are well-built, with three layers to provide maximal comfort. The second layer includes three ergonomic zones to ensure your spine remains aligned while your shoulders can gently sink and your hips remain cradled. However, our reviewer found the mattress is a bit too soft for some. The Pure Green Organic Mattress is the company’s only mattress, but it’s available in medium and firm options. Built with organic latex, organic cotton, and organic New Zealand wool, it’s hand-sewn and assembled in an Illinois factory. The latex offers added breathability while also absorbing pressure, making this mattress a selection for anyone who needs back pain relief. It arrives fully assembled in recyclable packaging. Some customers have complained it’s too firm, even the medium option, for their needs. The brand offers two material choices for your mattress, with hybrid and memory foam options; in total, you can choose from 18 models. We’ve reviewed the Green Tea Memory Foam by Zinus previously, and it was a hit! This mattress comes delivered in a box, and it quite literally infuses green tea into each layer to keep things fresh. Three layers of memory, comfort, and base foams plus seven zones of pressure relief combine to make sure your back is well supported. It’s also durable and affordable, with the lowest price on our list. Drawbacks include that it takes longer than other mattresses to expand and is a bit heavy to move. It’s important to find the intersection between price and quality. You don’t want to spend more than you’re comfortable with, but you shouldn’t sacrifice a good night’s sleep with a cheap mattress. Our pick for the most affordable option is the Zinus Memory Foam because it’s just that: the intersection of affordability and quality.

Comfort and sleep quality

It’s vital when shopping for a mattress to make sure it appeals to your individual needs. If you’re someone who needs more support and finds a firm sleep surface more comfortable, a firmer option (either in material or build) is your best bet. Conversely, if you prefer a more plush option, we recommend the Saatva Classic Mattress in plush soft. Some mattresses can take a few nights to break in, so it’s important to not give up if night one isn’t everything you were dreaming of. However, if things don’t get better, you should absolutely switch and find something that improves your sleep quality.

Sizes

Choosing the right mattress size comes down to a number of factors. If you’re an average-sized person sleeping alone, then a full-size bed should work just fine. If you’re taller, you may want to look into a king or a queen, each of which stretches 80 inches long. If you have a smaller living space, you’ll most likely need a twin size, which is 38 by 75 inches, or a twin XL, which is 38 by 80 inches. For us, the best twin option is the Casper Original, because it offers a good balance between firmness and cushion.

Firmness and support

Different sleepers will require different firmness options. For example, side sleepers will benefit from more cushioning, because, according to Breus, it’s “needed around the shoulders and hips to keep these areas aligned with the spine.”  Body type will also contribute to your firmness and support needs. Breus says in general, “The more you weigh, the deeper your body will sink into your mattress.” As a result, heavier people will benefit from a mattress in the 6 to 8 range on the firmness scale, while people lighter than 130 pounds should seek something softer for cushioning and contouring. Our pick for a firm mattress is the Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm; it offers a solid foundation and stellar motion isolation.

Material type

Breus points out that, while there are a lot of kinds of mattresses, there are five materials a mattress can be made from: foam, latex, innerspring, hybrid, and airbed. Each one offers its own benefits and is suited for specific needs. For example, foam is naturally contouring, making it a good option for someone who needs spinal support. Our favorite foam mattress is the Tempur-Cloud by TempurPedic because of its responsiveness while eliminating motion transfer. Latex, on the other hand, is naturally contouring with less sinking, plus it’s more breathable, making it an option for people who sleep hot. Breus tells us that innerspring mattresses are good for people who move around a lot, as the surface allows for movement without a lot of sinkage; additionally, they tend to be more affordable than other mattresses.  The advantages of a hybrid mattress will come down to what it’s made of. For example, “Foam hybrids are a good choice for people who need cushioning and pressure relief without sacrificing sturdy support. Latex hybrids tend to be very responsive and breathable.”  So, it’s worth being clear on what exactly you are looking for and your needs before you purchase a mattress.

Construction and durability

Any mattress is an investment, so it’s important to make sure you’re buying one that will withstand the test of time. There are a handful of different materials beds can be made of, and each offers its own lifespan. However, if longevity is your main concern, Breus, recommends latex: “Latex and high-density foam resist wear and tear better than other comfort layer materials.”  Breus points out that a mattress breaking down over time is unavoidable, no matter the materials, but latex is your best bet to combat this. Our personal favorite latex mattress is the Natural Escape by My Green Mattress. It offers just the right amount of cushioning and give.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Jack Byram has written countless articles about mattresses and mattress companies for different publications. He’s interviewed numerous sleep professionals, ranging from chiropractors to sleep consultants, to find out just what is needed for a great night of sleep. For this article, he diligently researched and scoured product reviews, examined prior testing conducted by The Spruce, and also used the insight provided by Michael Breus, PhD, of The Sleep Doctor, to find the best online mattress companies. While 24 to 48 hours is generally the recommendation, some manufacturers will recommend more or less. Some people say to just eyeball it and go for it when the mattress seems ready, but it’s important to heed the directions given by your specific manufacturer. In regards to design, the best mattresses to be sent in a box are going to be latex and memory foam. Innerspring beds are not ideal because compressing the springs can cause damage to them.
