While amethyst used to be considered as valuable as emeralds and rubies, it is now much easier to obtain thanks to large deposits that were discovered in Brazil in the 19th century. Most of the amethyst found in Brazil is a medium shade of purple. Some amethyst can be heat-treated to alter its color, turning it into yellow citrine.

Meanings and Uses of Amethyst

Amethyst is said to have a calming, soothing effect. It’s often recommended for quieting the mind, meditation, and focus. In addition, amethyst can help enhance intuition and encourage spiritual wisdom. This combination makes amethyst a powerful tool in decision-making, helping you to receive and trust your intuition while also quieting a busy mind. Amethyst also helps to connect and harmonize the physical, mental, and emotional bodies. It can clear the aura and create more stability. It also connects heaven and earth, and blends spiritual inspiration with reason and intellect.  Likely because of its purple color, amethyst has been associated with Bacchus, the Greek god of wine. The name “amethyst” even comes from the Greek word meaning “not drunk.”

Uses in Feng Shui

Activate Xun, the Wealth Area

The wealth area of the feng shui bagua, called Xun in Chinese, is associated with abundance of all kinds. It’s also connected to your sense of self-worth. This is one of the most popular areas of the bagua, and it’s also related to the color purple. If you’d like to work on inviting more abundance into your life, financial or otherwise, try placing an amethyst crystal in the Xun area of your home or bedroom. Find Xun, or your wealth area, by standing at the front door of your home or bedroom looking in, and locating the far left corner.

Activate Qian, the Helpful People Area

Because of amethyst’s ability to connect heaven and earth, it can be a welcome addition to the Helpful People area of the bagua, called Qian. This area is connected to benefactors and travel, as well as the concept of heaven. If you would like to create a stronger connection to the heavens, or invite more help from otherworldly sources, you may want to place amethyst here with that intention. To find the Qian position, stand in the front doorway of your home facing in. The right corner closest to you will be Qian.

Create a Calming Bedroom

Because of amethyst’s ability to calm and quiet the mind and create feelings of serenity, it’s a great crystal for easing restlessness. Try placing amethyst on your nightstand or under your bed to encourage deeper, more restorative rest. Amethyst can also help you to recall your dreams, so you may want to keep it near your bed with the intention of fostering a greater connection to your dream world.

Activate Your Meditation Area

Amethyst is also a helpful stone to meditate with because of its tendency to calm the mind, develop spiritual wisdom, and strengthen intuition. Add an amethyst crystal to your altar or meditation area to harness the meditative quality of amethyst.

Wear Amethyst Jewelry

Amethyst is a popular stone for jewelry, and this can be a beautiful way to work with its energy on a daily basis. Wearing amethyst on your body may be especially helpful if you are wanting to connect to your intuition, calm your mind, or balance your emotions in your everyday life.  Look for a piece of jewelry that resonates with you and that you find beautiful, and consciously set an intention for how you would like it to support you.
